Rio Grande Valley — The "universal" blood type is in low supply. United Blood Services is asking that Rio Grande Valley residents come out and donate blood.
As of now, type "O negative" is desperately needed.
Officials say while only 6% of the population has O negative blood, most blood transfusion patients in trauma centers are given O negative blood because anyone can receive it.
It's especially valuable during a disaster like hurricane sandy.
