MCALLEN - Have you ever been in Holiday Wine & Liquor?
If so, you have supported the largest family owned and operated wine and liquor store in the Valley.
"Everybody else has sold out, closed or merged their businesses, but we have been able to keep our doors open and be successful at it," said David Hernandez.
Now Holiday Wine & Liquor isn't the only store of it's kind, it is just the oldest. They have been open for the last 30 years. But to do this took effort from the whole Hernandez family.
"It's a family business from start to finish. I started when I was 8, my brother runs one of the stores, we all spent our Christmas breaks and spring breaks here. My grandma works here, my cousin, my aunt, my uncle, and my dad runs it," said Catia Hernandez, Development Manager.
Started in Weslaco in 1982, Hernandez has expanded the business to six stores and is working on opening a seventh in Brownsville.
"We decided to expand a month after I opened the first store. It went so well, we figured we hit a little gold mine," said David Hernandez.
But this is the fairy tale of small business. Unfortunately, most small business stories don't work out this way. Dr. Michael Abebe at UTPA studies business and said it's the beginning stages that determines most success.
"Official statistics on this subject tells us that about fifty percent of businesses that were start up, they won't make it the first five years," said Dr. Abebe.
But HWL has made it work through the best years of the economy and the worst.
"I've had customers that have been here for 30 years. I've had their children come in and sometimes even their grandchildren," said David Hernandez.
So for the thirty year mark toasted their success and plans to enjoy another 30 more years in the business.
