Monday is the first day of early voting in Cameron County. The Cameron County Elections Office says they are off to a strong start. Within the first hour at the polling site at the elections office around 100 people voted, and at another polling site 25 people voted within 10 minutes of the doors being open.
"I am expecting 50% of all votes to come in during early voting."
"In addition to strong early voting numbers Election Administrator Roger Ortiz is expecting big overall numbers. In 2008 67,000 people voted, this election he is expecting more than 70,000 to vote in Cameron County."
People we talked to are particularly interested in the local races including the DA race between Democrat Luis Saenz and Republican Chuck Mattingly.
"You have been seeing the news, all the problems with DA Mr. Villalaobos who got indicted, we want to see if we can get things straight."
Ortiz says things and have been running smoothly. This election they are using a new system call Vo-Tec.
"It tracks what's going on at any location at any time, we are monitoring the locations which ones are online, which ones are offline and we can track what's being used.
Francisco Trevino has been voting for more than 50 years and voted Monday has this reminder to get out and vote.
"Say our peace, we just can't complain, the vote is the only thing that will do it."
Early voting runs until November 2nd.
