A woman convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death made an appearance in court on Tuesday.
The defense called Melissa Lucio to testify in the case of her baby's father, Roberto Antonio Alvarez, who is charged with injury to a child. Also called to testify was Sonia Chavez, the sister to of Lucio, to testify over a parents duty to protect their children. Melissa Lucio, the first woman ever sentenced to death in Cameron county, took the stand, but did not testify because her case is in the process of appeal.
A jury found her guilty last year and the couples child, Mariah Alvarez, died in February of 2007. Law enforcement claims the toddler was beaten to death and Alvarez could face life in prison if convicted.
