University of Texas at Brownsville students had something to cheer about on Friday. After months of waiting the school finally has a new mascot.
The ocelot was selected as the new face of UTB after edging out the jaguarundi, bull shark, parrot and vaquero in a school-wide vote.
Hundreds of students and faculty were on hand as the winner was revealed in the courtyard of the Education and Business Complex.
The ocelot, best described as a miniature leopard, is native to both South Texas and Mexico. The cat will replace the school’s old mascot, the scorpion, which had been in place since the early 1990’s.
