Texas school district police undergo mandatory weapons training.
School district police officers are undergoing mandatory weapons training in several Texas districts.
La Joya Independent School District Officer Roel Guerra recently completed his yearly firearms training exam alongside the other members of the La Joya ISD police department.
The training is mandatory for every school officer.
Chief Raul Gonzalez has been leading the school police for for 11 years, and recent years have prompted changes, like guns in the hands of school officers.
"Eleven years ago we never talked about having police officers at the school district, or having a police department at the school district," said Gonzalez. "And now we are up to more than 45 police officers at La Joya ISD , and almost every school district in the Valley and every school district in the state has police officers."
