It is a brand new school year and high school student Itxel Martinez has some big goals.
“I want to be a straight “A” student,” says Martinez.
The sophomore student will be taking both high school and college courses this year.
“Everything has to be time managed,” says Martinez. “Every minute counts.”
Martinez is one of about 400 students to attend the brand new campus of the Brownsville Early College High School (BECHS). A school, that Principal Dawn Hall says, is specifically geared to move highly motivated students from the ninth grade through the first two years of college.
“It is a chance to really help kids who want to go to college,” says Hall. “This school provides a pathway.”
By the time BECHS students graduate they will have both a high school diploma and the benefit of having completed two years of college courses.
“We keep telling kids to be prepared for college and that college is important,” says Hall. “But how do they get there?”
This will be the 5th school year of BECHS but the first at a new campus. The new location is just across the street from the University of Texas at Brownsville.
