MCALLEN - A white sheet covers the body of a small four year old child. He's the only victim left on scene after an accident happened on Expressway 83, just after 10:30 a.m.
"It involves what I understand to be a one vehicle collision, we have a deceased child, he is four years of age," said Lt. Joel Morales, McAllen Police Department.
The other three passengers were all taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
"I can tell you that the child was ejected, as far as the restraints go that is part of the investigation," said Morales.
But authorities kept the highway closed off for almost six hours to try and figure how the accident happened.
It's a true race against time, as these investigators try to break down the scene of the accident. They have to learn things like speed, weight and point of impact to figure out how this one vehicle crashed.
That's why a McAllen police unit continually speeds through the accident scene, and then slamming on his breaks. He does this several times before he can determine the vehicles true speed during the accident.
"The driver is cooperating with the police officers, so all of this is all part of this on going investigation into the death of this child in this collision," said Morales.
Police have not determined if criminal charges will be filed.
