Florida neighborhood on edge after fatal mauling.
A black bear killed a dog in the back yard of a home near DeLand, Florida over the weekend, and neighbors fear the bear will go after other pets or possibly people.
Owner Greg Mapp said his beloved Mollie, a 14-year-old Rottweiler-Dalmation mix, was a good guard dog, so when an intruder burst into the yard Saturday night she did what she was supposed to do: She went after the intruder.
But she was no match for the bear.
Mapp said he heard a commotion at about 11 p.m.
"My dog was just a hollering and screaming," he said.
He was stunned to see Mollie in a fight for her life.
A surveillance camera was rolling, but the light was off, so you can only see shadowy images of the attack that killed Mollie.
"The bear and my dog were going toe to toe, and apparently it mauled it, and there was nothing I could do about it," Mapp said.
Wildlife officers think dog food likely attracted the bear, which crashed through the yard from a wooded area that abuts it.
