In Harlingen a man is behind bars on six different charges including assault on a police officer. His common law wife spoke out to our cameras describing what police did to arrest her husband and saying police used excessive force. This is Raul Ontiveros. Police say he broke into a car at this apartment complex on North 26th street.
Police say officers tried to handcuff him and he became combative and struggled with the officer. Police say he then grabbed a rear annetta from the police unit and broke it off.
The man's wife disagrees.
"He did spit on them, but the way threw him on the cop car and threw of course something is going to break "
Police say he then resisted arrested and began punching at the officer. Police say Ontiveros was emitting a strong odor of marijuana and became violent punching and spitting at a police officer. Ontiveros had to be tasered to finally get him under control. Ontiveros wife said they say he was tased too long.
"He did him nasty, thrown on the floor and tased him for more than 5 seconds the cops can only tase for five seconds "
This witness disagrees with Ontiveros's wife. He says police didn't tase him that long and they did nothing wrong.
Ontiveros is charged assault on a public servant, resisting arrest, burglary of a vehicle, public intoxication and criminal mischief. Police say they continue to interview witnesses.
