EDINBURG — A grisly discovery tonight in the upper Valley.
Someone stumbled onto some human bones.
Homicide investigators talked to our Claudia Mickle...who brings us the latest.
"While sifting through some dirt, they located what appeared to be skeletal remains," said Lt. Oscar Trevino.
The bones were located near a canal on the 17-hundred block of Raul Longoria in Edinburg, just north of Cano Gonzalez Elementary.
"This is the first situation I've encountered where the remains have been skeletalized," said Trevino.
City crews were cleaning out a drainage ditch when they found the bones and called police.
"This drainage ditch runs from miles and miles from what I understand from county to county, so there's no telling how or where these remains came from," said Trevino.
Edinburg police department and city crews are helping in the investigation. They will be bringing in extra manpower and machinery to help excavate.
"We do have investigators that are sifting through the crime scene and as we speak they are still finding more evidence."
They are treating the case as a homicide. A pathologist and the Texas Rangers will also assist.
The gender of the remains is not yet known.
"There still needs to be some further examinations and an autopsy performed on the remains that have been found so far," said Trevino.
