WESLACO — There could be an increase of more parrots around the Valley thanks to members of the Weslaco Chamber MidValley Leadership Program who are building nesting sites for the red crowned parrot. The project started in February on three sites in Weslaco as several hollowed out palm trees, attached to a phone pole, were placed at certain locations. Project member Sarah Williams stated on it works, "A woodpecker will come and peck through the tree to create a hole, because he's looking for food. Then after a time a parrot will come by and see the hole and reinforce the hole and enlarge it and build a nest inside." Flocks of parrots migrate to the Valley during the winter.
