The UTB/TSC men's soccer team began the 2009 regular season with a 2-1 win against Red River Athletic Conference opponent Huston-Tillotson University (0-1) in a non-conference game at REK Center Field.
The Scorpions are now 1-0 in 2009 and 4-0 all-time against Huston-Tillotson. UTB/TSC jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period after goals by forwards Abass Ayembillah and Evans Frimpong.
Frimpong began the scoring for the Scorpions with a goal assisted by Ayembillah. Ayembillah added a goal at the 34:00 mark to put the Scorpions up 2-0. Huston-Tillotson got back in the game with a second period goal by Pedro Zamarripa, but the Scorpions were able to hang on for the win.
After the game Scorpion head men's soccer coach Dan Balaguero was happy his team had won but would have liked to see a better performance.
"We're obviously glad for the win," Balaguero said. "Anytime we play conference, we need the win. I wasn't very happy with the team's performance, especially during the second half. But it's early and right now and it's all about finding the right formation."
Aside from the goals by Ayembillah and Frimpong, Balaguero said the team was helped by the energetic performance by Scorpion freshman forward Mario Perez, who paced the team with his speed.
"Mario was definitely the difference tonight," Balaguero said. "He electrified the crowd."
The Scorpions will next face the University of Saint Thomas at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 3 at REK Center Field.
