HIDALGO COUNTY — The summer food service program kicked-off on Thursday as federal and state agriculture leaders joined Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley to provide free healthy snacks and meals to children of low income families. Lasty year, Catholic Charities operated more than fifty feeding sites which served nearly 43,000 children in the Valley. The feeding sites help bridge the summer vacation gap and Sister Norma Pimentel stated, "To make sure children are fed in our Valley. Children that otherwise would not have food to eat really because they depended so much on the school system to have food. Now we have this available to them during the summer."
