MCALLEN — April is Organ Donor Month and the City of McAllen is the only location for a organ transplant center in all of South Texas.
On Monday, donor families, survivors, doctors and those still on the waiting list came to share about the importance of organ donation and how it saves lives. State Legislators are working to change part of the donor law so families no longer have to make a decision immediately after their loved one's death. Roger Luna with the South Texas Transplant Center stated, "They are trying to pass the law that once you say yes, that is the final draw. Right now it is good to go ahead and make your wishes known to your spouse or your family that you want to sign up for an organ donor. We are working on that once you sign up and your name is in that database you are an organ donor."
An organ donation can save up to eight lives and in tribute to the donors and recipients a flag was raised in honor of organ donation and will fly year round in at the McAllen Medical Center.
