McALLEN — A recent press conference by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had some people up in arms about her views on border security.
Napolitano spoke during a press media stating that the border section near Mexico are safer than ever and that the direct violence from the drug cartels isn't spilling over into the United States. During her visit to the Valley local law enforcement agencies informed the Secretary about battling cartel drug smugglers, such as human traffickers, on a daily basis and covering these crimes is affecting their police department's. Mission Interim Police Chief Martin Garza said, "When we are discussing about inner-city crime and when we discuss about our neighborhood watch programs, when we discus issues about covering regular crime like theft, burglaries, those are the things that we are tending to shy away from because we are having to rush to address these border issues and concerns and those resources are being drained toward that area."
The Mission Police Department is pouring local money into border security and Garza says he was happy that the Secretary listened to their concerns, but that the Secretary gave no reaction as to what will be done about the issues.
