Local Soldier Awarded Medal of Valor

SULLIVAN CITY - A local soldier from Sullivan City was decorated for his heroism in Afghanistan in a ceremony held in Kentucky on Monday.

U.S. Army Specialist Michael A. Garcia was awarded the Army Commendation Medal of Valor at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.  Specialist Garcia, an Army medic, was cited for his bravery in treating three wounded comrades during a crossfire ambush last June in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan. Despite his own exposure to enemy fire, Garcia helped ensure the survival of all three wounded soldiers.
