BROWNSVILLE - Cameron county's unemployment rate is the second highest in the State of Texas with the state average falling to 7.8% and Cameron county at 11.2%.
Each day hundreds of individuals, seeking jobs, go into the Texas Workforce Solutions building to see what jobs are available. The problem however isn't so much the lack of jobs, but the lack of qualified people to fill those jobs. TWS Executive Pat Hobbs says, "There are jobs available, but the match between the skilled sets of our unemployed and the jobs that are available are not there. Our job as a work force board is to bring those unemployed in and train them to those skill sets that are being demanded by employers then there's a match and they get employed and the unemployment rate falls." There are currently 11,000 people in Cameron county collecting unemployment benefits.
