If you registered your child for a football camp this weekend at the Brownsville Sports Park, please beware, it could be a scam.
The United Way office in Brownsville received a call yesterday from a parent inquiring about a football camp that was going to be held August 1st, when she was informed that the United Way Football Camp had been held on July 9th, and that another one was not scheduled, she was concerned.
The parent had been approached by a man who had coached her child in the Youth Football League, stating that another football camp was to be held and if she was interested in registering him, she asked him who was putting it on, and the man answered, the same people as last time, the United Way and asked her for thirty dollars, when she tried to pay him with a check, he said that he was only taking cash.
Traci Wickett, preisdent and CEO of the United Way of Southern Cameron County, urges residents not to give money to someone representing that there is a United Way event, especially if they are insisting on cash, and if you have any suspicions about any United Way event, you can call them at 548-6880 and call the Brownsville Police Department and file a report if you have had taken money from you.
