EDINBURG - Finding a cure for diabetes is a constant goal for many people, but to beat the disease health officials believe all diabetes organizations need to join together in the fight.
Through the South Texas RGV Diabetes Initiative more than 150 people came together at UTPA as part of a diabetes summit. The goal is to get the disease in the region under control by improving diabetes car and reducing healthcare cost. Doctors say the prevalence of diabetes in the Valley is 20% higher than the national average. DHR Public Affairs Officer Israel Rocha says, "We have a large Hispanic population that is part of the community and diabetes is a disease that is encountered greater in high poverty community and we have still our share of a larger percentage of high communities in South Texas."
