MCALLEN - Family, friends, veteran and active duty members of the military gathered at the McAllen Convention Center today to honor Army Specialist Kurt Kern.
The ceremony capped a somber weekend in the Upper Valley as Kern's remains returned home Friday, a viewing was held yesterday and finally today his remains were laid to rest.
The funeral stood as a reminder that despite major combat operations in Iraq coming to a close, the United States is still very much invested in overseas conflict. Kern is the 37th Valley native to be killed in Iraq or Afghanistan since the spring of 2003.
Kurt Kern was just 24 years old.
