The University of Texas at Brownsville says this will be the last season the baseball team.
"I never thought the baseball program would be cut, I thought I would finish my career here and play for family and friends locally."
RJ Garza is a sophomore at the University of Texas at Brownsville. He and his teammates are shocked this will be their last season..
"I have been here for two years they have been a two good years every year we have got better and set records, it's unfortunate that we are not going to be able to play next year for my senior year."
"I have been here for 3 years I have established myself as a key player it's tough on the coaches and my teammates."
With the University recently splitting from Texas Southmost College the University says they lost the $900,000 dollars from their athletics department.
The athletic department said following that loss in money they still wanted to compete in athletics at University in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics conference.
In order to do so the conference requires the University to have six sports teams. The university decided to drop baseball and add cross country to make their budget.
"this is not we wanted to do, it's a matter of finances we just want keep the athletic program running."
Tuesday baseball coach Bryan Aughney was out on diamond getting ready for his last season which starts in about a month. He says will be a very difficult one following the news.
"Myself and assistances have put our heart and sole in program our players and building the best program we could producing the best men we can."
The UTB players say they going to go out with a bang in their final season.
"We are going to play hard and we will be making some noise."
"We are going to win and show how this program matters."
