Mary Dauma is the Pan American Mobile and RV park manager. She like many park managers are upset about an ordinance passed by the San Benito city council.
On top of their regular water and sewage bill the ordinance says there is a $5 fee for water and $5 fee for sewer per unit to all multi unit users accounts every month. Since the park uses Rio Hondo's water, they pay just the sewage fee. Dauma says there are 94 lots on at the park and whether there is an mobile home or R-V there or not they are getting charged $5 dollars for each lot.
"We are paying this money to the city, that we feel we shouldn't have to pay when no one is using water or sewer if the lots are empty."
Dauma there are only seven fulltime residents at the park, some winter texas who only stay 4-6 months out of the year, and rest of the lots are empty. Dauma says this isn't the first time the city has hit the park hard with a big bill. Currently they remain under Rio Hondo's water, but the city of San Benito annexed their park for sewage three years ago.
"They charged us $30,000 dollars for pipe out here, we already had sewer hook up so we feel that it was an unadjust cost."
Between paying off the piping bill and sewage fees Dauma says it's hard for a young couple from Brownsville who own the park to fit the bill.
"She is trying to make ends meet they have two daughters in college, a daughter in grade school, she works as a nurse practitioner and works three for four jobs at time."
Dauma says if this ordinance stays in place she says the owners of the park will have raise the rent to park users. If that happens they are worried the park users will leave the city and head to a cheaper park.
