BROWNSVILLE - The University of Texas in Brownsville Lady's Scorpion volleyball team returned home late Monday evening with a new title of National Champions.
The team became the new NAIA National Champions after a 3-1 victory over Concordia University at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa late Saturday night. About forty fans came out to greet the team at the Brownsville/South Padre International Airport and celebrate the historic victory. Volleyball Head Coach Todd Lowery said, "This year we knew we had something at the start of the season. It took a lot of hard work throughout the season and had to play perfect when we went to nationals. There is so many teams that were so close, I feel like anybody in the top six or seven could have won it, but the girls just went there and performed and did everything that we worked on all season long."
Because fall semester final exams begin Tuesday, a public recognition of the new national champions will be held at a later date.
