The Texas Department of Transportation is working with local police departments to raise awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving, kicking off a new campaign called, "Choose Your Ride".
TXDot and Harlingen Police are using an educational tool to keep drunks from getting behind the wheel.
They're doing this, with a new car, which is half taxi cab, and half squad car.
This afternoon, workers were finishing up their final touches on the half cab/half cop car hybrid.
Harlingen Police say, the campaign message is that you have two choices when you drink.
Call a cab or get a designated driver...
Or, get arrested for DWI, and take a ride to jail.
This car even has a local taxi cab's phone number displayed on the side for drivers to call if they need a safe ride home.
Sgt. Adam Muniz says, they want to show that drivers do have options.
"I hope the message gets across that it's way easier to get a cab and cheaper than going thru court costs and arrests. Hopefully the point gets across," he says.
Police say, they started this campaign primarily for their labor day crackdown on drunk driving.
Every hour, two texans are killed or injured in an alcohol-related traffic crash.
TX Dot plans on putting these cars in in the entertainment districts in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
