On South Padre Island, a teenager drowns and a CBP officer is suspected of drowning within the last week. Authorities are doing everything they can to prevent more tragedies as the peak beach season is fast approaching.
The most recent drowning happened just Wednesday. Beach Patrol units units from South Padre Island are keeping a close eye on the waters making sure people are staying safe.
17-year-old Matthew Cantu from San Benito was in the water when the Cameron County Constable says the teen drowned in the rough waters, between Beach Access 5 and 6. The South Padre Island Fire Department has a formed beach patrol to try to prevent these incidents from happening.
They try their best along with the Coast Guard to get to a rescue scene as quickly as possible, but sometimes it's hard for them to get there in time. They warn swimmers to be very careful in the water when there are rough conditions.
