There are over 7 billion people on earth
As the world's population increases so do the questions about sustainability, or lack there of.
"I don't think we have the luxury of playing the ignorance is bliss card anymore," says local activist Eduardo Martinez. "It's pretty critical where we're at and I think that we really need to start taking apart our ideas as a culture." Martinez says its time to change the way we think. Even though the world can support over 7 billion people we have to change the way it's doing it.
Martinez's main concern with the population is water and getting the world to understand how irreplacable it is. UTPA sociology professor Igor Ryabov agrees but he says its not only about drinking water. Ryabov says an overcrowded earth will increase the greenhouse affect and before it gets to a critical point its up to us to take a good look at our carbon footprint.
By teh year 2050 the world's population is set to jump to over 9 billion people. Martinez says reusing, reducing and recycling is important now more than ever.
