If you're in South Padre Island today, chances are you'll hear the roar by the shore. Bikers are setting up for the 17th annual bike fest.
The South Padre Island Convention Center will host numerous charity events and house thousands of bikers looking to relax and ride in the island breeze.
Bike Fest organizers say the pre-registration numbers are up by a little over 20% this year. Dan Quandt, Executive Director of the South Padre Island Convention & Visitors Bureau says there's a wide variety of people attending.
"Most of these people are lawyers, accountants...professional people, but they like to get the leather on and get riding."
Bike Fest is a huge event for South Padre during the fall that brings a boost to the economy.
"Impact is in the millions of dollars, if you look at the 15,000 people and they each spend even $100 dollars, you're already at a million and a half."
Most of the revenue will be brought in by local hotels, restaurants, and night clubs.
"You won't go anywhere in South Padre Island, and also in Port Isabel without seeing motorcycles this weekend."
Additional proceeds from Bike Fest will go to benefit south Texas charities and other local organizations.
a biker bra auction will be held tomorrow designed specifically to benefit less fortunate women who need mammograms in the Rio Grande Valley.
"It's always an uplift, it's an event that make people in the area smile, and they're just happy that it's here and that it's going on. It's a very important impact for the people in the area and in a couple of days, people will realize why it's called Roar By The Shore."
The thousands of bikers passing through and posting up will not only be here for today's festivites, but through out the weekend as well.
