WESLACO - A very somber mood as Sgt. Rudy Rodriguez was laid to rest at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetary.
A very emotional day for the Rodriguez family as funeral services begin in Weslaco Monday morning at the Templo Ebenezer church.
Rodriguez's casket was in the middle of the alter with several pictures and his metals surrounding him. The family of army Sgt. Rodriguez was in the first row including his wife and two children.
Several songs were sung to remember the Sgt. from Weslaco.
Rodriguez was killed by an IED protecting our country in Afghanistan.
General David Ruebenstein spoke kind words for the fallen solider.
"His strong sense of values, his loyalty to soldiers in his platoon, and loved for his family form the foundation on which his personal and military success rests."
A good friend of Rodriguez from the church also spoke.
"He was humble young man, since a very young age he would never say no to anything to, he would do anything you would ask."
Following the church service Rodriguez body was put in a hearse and a procession escorted Rodriguez to the Rio Grande Valley State cemetary.
Captain David Trevino of the Rio Grande Patriot Guard Riders along with 35 of his fellow riders were in the front of the hearse escorting the procession to cemetary.
"We are here to pay respect overall, and at the same time to him to his final resting place and pay tribute for the sacrifice for defending our great country."
Along the way from Weslaco to Mission fire departments from the upper valley were lined up of the line of the expressway with a large US flag and their fire trucks.
"Army man Rodriguez lived here in Pharr and we thought we would honor the family."
Early Monday afternoon the hurse and the procession drove through two large american flags and into the cemetary.
Rodriguez was then laid to rest.
