Brownsville Mayor Pat Ahumada is now formally charged with abuse of office and theft.
Mayor Pat Ahumada stood before a 107th District Court Judge and pleaded not guilty to the charge of abuse of office and theft. The charge stemmed from a grand jury indictment accusing the mayor of allegedly depositing a city check into his personal bank account for $26,000.
As Ahumada left the courtroom he had no comment and let his attorney make all statements.
Edmund Cyganiewicz, who is the former South Padre Island mayor is representing the mayor. Ahumada dropped his former attorney John Blaylock. Cyganiewicz says a trial is set for this summer.
As the mayor left the courthouse he hugged and shook hands with his friends including a friend of 15 years Edgar Trevino.
Ahumada will continue his normal day to day duties as mayor until his trail in July.
