The Hidalgo Sheriff's Department received an award for their efforts in lowering the crime rate in the county.
The department's APE operation received two best practice awards from the Texas Association of Counties on Tuesday. The APE operation was launched a year and a half ago and involves deputies actively going into the community and asking questions to tackle crime before it happens. Deputies focused more in the Eastern part of Hidalgo county and hope to expand to the entire county in the next couple of months.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino stated, "It took several policing strategies and we took the best tenants of each one and created one that was able to fit in our community and it worked." This award marks the first time a single county project has received two best practice awards within the same year. Operation APE stands for Awareness, Prevention and Enforcement.
