5th graders from James Bowie Elementary in Harlingen had the chance to help the Texas National Guard in tearing down one of many drug houses in the city.
The vacant home was located right across from the school and students shouted out "Knock it down!" as machinery dismantled the home. The Texas National Guard funds Operation Crackdown through seized drug money from across the state. A total of 34 structures will be demolished in Harlingen through September 8th.
Texas National Guard Colonel Randall Davis says, "During the daytime they look like a simple ordinary building, rundown. At night the lights are on and they are either selling drugs out of it, or they're actually using crack cocaine in it."
Officials say a gang used to hang out in the home and there was evidence of drug use inside by authorities finding lighters, needles and syringes.
