TxDOT officials joined forces with the Department of Public Safety and local authorities in Edinburg to kick off it's Drink, Drive, Go to Jail campaign.
Authorities and members of the community gathered to discuss the dangers of drinking and driving and created the campaign to increase awareness to the public. Last year over a thousand people died in alcohol related deaths across the state making Texas one of the leading states in drinking fatalities. Officials say it's a problem that haunts the state and they will maintain their zero tolerance policy against drunk drivers.
TxDOT Regional Commander Jose C. Rodriguez stated, "DWI is something law enforcement takes very seriously. Our job is to find and arrest those people who threaten the safety of our citizens. The bottom line is this, you drink, you drive, you go to jail."
The campaign will last through Labor Day weekend and several law enforcement officers will work overtime across the state to get drunk drivers off the road.
