Since Texas is leading the nation with the most drinking and driving fatalities and crashes, the Texas Department of Transportation is launching its annual campaign this month called "Drink. Drive. Go to jail.
It wants to remind all the drivers during holiday weekends and during any holiday time that drinking and driving does have its consequences and it is a crime. Law enforcement agencies across the state will step up their efforts to increase public awareness and to remind drivers to be responsible.
TxDOT has even set up a website. It offers several alternatives and can be easily accessed from a smart phone. It's even linked to twitter and facebook so people can communicate with friends and find a ride home.
TxDOT says its to help people understand that there are no excuses.
First time offenders may end up in jail and pay up to $17,000 in fines and legal fees. Not to mention drivers may lose their license.
TxDOT says it hopes the crack down will teach drivers that its just not worth it.
