The first group of injured soldiers arrive at the new Bethesda Naval Medical Center.
A century-old tradition in the care of U.S.service members has ended.
The first group of wounded military members arrived at the new Bethesda Naval Medical Barracks Friday as Walter Reed Medical Center begins to close down.
The servicemen and women had been wounded in Iraq, then flown to a U.S. air base in Germany.
Walter Reed, which has treated wounded U.S. servicemen since World War I, is being closed due to the massive costs that would have been necessary to renovate the hospital.
The new facility at Bethesda will absorb some of its patient load.
