Police arrested 44-year-old Rafael Pedrez, also known as “El Cubano”, on Tuesday stemming from his connection with two bank robberies from this past month.
“He was able to be positively identified as the subject who committed the bank robbery at the First National Bank on Monday afternoon,” says Lieutenant Orlando Rodriguez. “He's also the same suspect that committed the robbery at the Compass Bank on July 5th.”
According to Rodriguez, investigators obtained warrants for Pedrez and served him at city jail this afternoon on two counts of aggravated robbery. They also executed a search warrant at the residence where they were able to find evidence implicating Pedrez to the bank robberies. Rodriguez says that crime stoppers and locals played a large role in the arrest.
“It's our way of defining community oriented policing,” says Rodriguez. “When the community steps forward and takes action against one of its own members.”
Rodriguez says the Brownsville PD is making an effort to increase the patrol cars in the downtown area, but he encourages banks to take more caution.
“Actually banks are taking action,” says Rodriguez. “Thankfully no one was injured and the case is closed.”
