An overpass in McAllen is being blamed for causing 4 fatal wrecks in 4 years. The most recent happened just last night.
It all happened on the Bicentennial overpass in McAllen. It was around 7:45 last night when 19-year-old, Benjamin Rodriguez, drove his 1998 Malibu through barriers before plummeting onto the highway below.
McAllen Police say shortly after the hit, the car burst into flames killing the 19-year-old instantly. McAllen investigators say the ramp to get on the overpass was closed off. They are now investigating what would make the teen drive through the barriers.
“I can tell you there were 3 other accidents besides this but I don't have any information on those.”
In November, 24-year-old, José Luis Perches, drove through concrete barriers, flipping his vehicle onto the highway. He was rushed to a local hospital but didn't survive his injuries. Since that collision, an onramp leading from the Westbound Frontage Road of Expressway 83 to the t-shaped overpass intersection has been closed to traffic.
“This accident is under investigation so I can't make a comparison until the investigation results are in.”
A spokesperson for TX-DOT tells us the overpass will be shut down for several days as police continue to investigate.
