The flights will begin July 15th. That’s a little over three weeks from today and the flights will depart from this airport and fly directly into Monterrey.
It will be the first Mexican airline to offer direct flights from Brownsville to Monterrey. Two companies had wanted to offer the same flights in the past but those potential deals fell through.
"This is a dream for many people from both sides of the border to have a direct flight between these two cities."
Mexican Consul, Rodolfo Quilantan, had a meeting with Brownsville Mayor, Tony Martinez and representatives of aeroméxico yesterday and all agreed to bring this airline to the lower valley. Quilantan strongly believes this airline will turn Brownsville’s economy around.
"The economy is going to boost incredible because as you know, many Mexicans, from three states, particularly, Coahuila, Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon have a lot of ties, economic, family, or professional ties with the region of Brownsville."
Vice president for the Brownsville Economic Development Council, Gilberto Salinas, tells us they've been discussing this deal with the airline for quite some time now but it wasn't so much the city of Brownsville pushing to bring this airline in.
"it's not like we went to them so much that they came to us and said okay, we see the market now, how can we get some help to make this project happen."
Not only do officials say this will boost the economy but it will also make it safer and easier for people to travel.
Aeroméxico will fly on Fridays and Sundays and roundtrip fares will be as much as $350.
