The U.S. Department of Energy is designating $9 million dollars to the Valley, but there are strings attached to the money.
The money can be used for everything from home and business weatherization to energy-saving traffic signals. They want it spent quickly and want to see jobs being created with the funding. Brownsville and Harlingen are getting $2.3 million, while Edinburg, McAllen, Mission, Pharr and Hidalgo county get the rest of the $9 million dollars.
