A sign carrying cheering picket line greeted passers by at Valley Regional Medical Center on Alton Gloor around noon on Tuesday.
It was organized by a nurses union, which said it was protesting the firing of seven nurses, who refused to accept additional duties at the hospital. Valley Regional officials, in a statement, said they're in contract negotiations with the registered nurses union and that the union is legally entitled to an informational picket. One of the nurses, who says she was fired, say it's a bigger problem than at just one hospital.
"I am standing here to raise public awareness on a pressing issue that has been going on in the ICU here in this hospital and across the nation. An that is, patient safety is being compromised by spreading the nurses too thin."
