Home burglaries, it's one of the most reported crimes in the City of Brownsville. Na'Tassia Finley has more on how you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a home burglary in this special report.
Every six hours and 48 minutes a home is broken into in the City of Brownsville as reported in the statistics from the Brownsville Police Department's 2010 crime report. In fact, home burglaries rank number two for the crime most reported to police. While the city saw a slight decline in that number from 2009 to 2010 and officers are hoping to keep that number dropping in 2011.
Crime prevention officers say there are simple and relatively cost friendly fixes that will keep your home off the radar of home burglaries. One of the easiest way to protect your home is placing a window lock onto your window and giving a burglar less time to get into the home. A second tip would be keeping any plants near your windows 6 to 8 inches below the window seal so that the burglar cannot be seen behind the plants. Also, wooden or solid door with a strike plate are great in preventing a burglar from breaking the door in. Lastly, we have some tips on the fencing around your home. Many homeowners like the privacy of a tall wood fence and so do burglars so it is suggested that homeowners purchase a chain link fence which makes it easier to see a burglar breaking into the home.
