This week the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center is asking people in Hidalgo county to become bone marrow transplant candidates.
The program places those registered on a national list and if they match a patient, that candidate could help someone whose in need of a bone marrow transplant. Becoming a bone marrow match is very rare and in fact there's only a 30% chance of even matching someone in your own family. To sign up, people had to fill out a health form and then rub a cotton swab sample on the inside of their mouth, in order to collect cheek cells. The registry will also be going to on Wednesday at the Tax Office and Health Department in Edinburg . For more information visit: http://www.southtexasblood.org/BeTheMatch.asp
