The Town of South Padre Island began it's first day of the smoking ban ordinance.
Under the ordinance smoking is prohibited in public places that are an enclosed area and are open to public. That includes places like restaurants.
Justin Warden is visiting from Robstown.
He's a smoker but says he does not mind the ordinance.
"Its good for the restaurants, brings in more people, and for the kids and younger crowds, its a lot better."
Under the smoking ban ordinance businesses that make 51% of their revenues from alcohol sales, basically bars would allow smoking.
Many folks we talked to choosing not go on camera say there in favor of ordinance.
If you are caught smoking in a prohibited area you could be fined of to $2,000.
