Investigators found the body of Sonia Perez inside her vehicle last night. Officials say the body had two gunshot wounds, one to the head and the other, on the side of her body.
A deputy constable made the gruesome discovery at around 10:30 last night. He told investigators he saw a suspicious van, with its lights on, parked on the side of the road between San Benito and Rio Hondo.
"When he approached the vehicle and went on the passenger side he found a female that was slumped over the steering wheel."
Perez still had her seatbelt on. When investigators arrived at the scene, they saw two gunshot wounds. One on her head and the second one on the side of her body.
Perez taught third grade at Rio Hondo Intermediate School. In a statement, Superintendent, Anneliese McMinn, tells News Center 23, "Ms. Perez was a devoted teacher dedicated to her students and was well-loved by the Rio Hondo Intermediate staff."
Perez had only been with the school district for a year. Counselors were on hand to help students and staff that may have been affected by the tragedy.
Perez was married and had two children. At this point, Sheriff Omar Lucio says they have no primary suspects and no one has been arrested.
Perez’s husband is a pastor at a church in San Benito. Lucio says they have not received information on marital issues between the couple that would make the husband a suspect.
"It’s just horrible. These things don't just happen in Rio Hondo. So it's really a shock."
No weapons or shell casings were found at the scene. Perez’s vehicle has been impounded for further investigation.
