PHARR- A man is arraigned Thursday after he's accused of attacking his mother and stepfather with a knife. According to police, it happened at 109 west cardinal street Wednesday night when Pedro Espinoza, 37, stabbed his mother multiple times in the chest and attacked his stepfather afterwards. The stepfather was stabbed in his right arm and had several cuts on his other arm as well.
Tania Martinez who is the cousin of Espinoza's wife and the granddaughter of the stabbed stepfather, told News Center 23, that Espinoza has just got out from a seven year sentence for stabbing his nephew. The suspect's mother came down from Arkansas with his children to visit him and kid's mother. According to neighbors, they saw Espinoza on Saturday walking up and down the street on something, however they weren't sure if he was on drugs or drunk.
Investigators said Espinoza has a criminal history of assault to a public servant and family violence. They also told us he has a mental illness but didn't elaborate on what kind. It is still not known why he attacked his parents, but they are expected to be ok
Espinoza was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and bond totaled to $500,000. He's heading to county jail and if convicted he could face up to 20 years in prison.
