The U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor pledged fidelity to the law during the first day of her confirmation hearings.
In her opening statement, Sotomayor told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that the law has guided her rulings as a judge and not personal or professional experiences. Some Republicans raised concerns that Sotomayor would let her own emotions and opinions affect her rulings.
The committee with a Democratic majority is expected to confirm Sotomayor's nomination. If confirmed, she would be the first Hispanic and third woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
