Several people gathered on Monday to break ground on something that's been in the works for quite some time, a new VA outpatient center.
The groundbreaking took place at the new VA Ambulatory Surgery and Specialty Outpatient Center in Harlingen. U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Congressman Henry Cuellar and city and county officials gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking.
It's not the hospital the vets have been pushing for, but Senator Hutchison says once the facility is up and running. Valley veterans will get similar services to the ones offered at the VA hospital in San Antonio.
The facility will offer outpatient services with six surgical suites and clinics for prosthetic care, oncology and sensory aids. The VA clinic is scheduled to open in October 2010.
