HIDALGO COUNTY - An average of 15 Texans die every year from flooding that's why Hidalgo County is supporting the state by making this week Flood Safety Awareness Week.
The county is warning residents of the dangers flooding brings to the area. The motto of this week is 'Turn Around... Don't Drown.'
"When they decide to cross over an area where there is moving water they are endangering whatever family is with them in the car, they are also endangering the lives of the first responders that are helping and having to go out there, or any bystander that's going to try and help them," said Oscar Montoya, Hidalgo County Emergency Management Coordinator.
The county is urging the public if they see standing water to not cross the roadway. Especially water that looks higher than the edge of their care tire. Officials say to turn around and find another route.
