Opening arguments in the case against Pedro Lugo, accused of stabbing his wife to death, began on Tuesday.
He is one of two people accused of killing his wife with the other suspect being her son when she went missing back in 2008. Prosecutors say the woman was killed on their one year wedding anniversary. A month before she died, she apparently filed for divorce. Prosecutors are trying to prove that Lugo murdered his wife in their apartment and then tried to cover it up by cleaning the crime scene with bleach.
A gag order is in affect meaning the defense will not comment on the case. In September of 2008 an arm was found in a canal in Willacy county. DNA analysis revealed that it belonged to the 68 year-old missing woman.
The trial continues on Wednesday and if convicted, Lugo could face life behind bars and up to $10,000 dollars in fines.
