In McAllen, the largest cadet class is now sworn in and gearing up to join the McAllen Police Department pushing their force to full staff.
17 cadets were selected out of more than 130 applicants and they are now on their way to becoming police officers. Before that happens, they have to go through the police academy which is a 20 week program that will instruct the cadets and prepare them for the state Peace Officer Licensing exam.
Even if all 17 cadets pass the state exam, Police Chief Victor Rodriguez says the department will always have the need for more officers on the street.
